          A

Among various programmes, TV talk shows have covered every inch of space on daytime television. And anyone who watches them regularly knows that each one is different in style. But no two shows are more opposite in content, while at the same time standing out above the rest, than the Jerry Springer and the Oprah Winfrey shows.

Jerry Springer could easily be considered the king of ¡°rubbish talk¡±. The contents on his show are as surprising as it can be. For example, the show takes the ever-common talk show titles of love, sex cheating and hate, to a different level. Clearly, the Jerry Springer show is about the dark side of society, yet people are willing to eat up the troubles of other people¡¯s lives.

Like Jerry Springer, Oprah Winfrey takes TV talk show to its top, but Oprah goes in the opposite direction. The show is mainly about the improvement of society and different quality of life. Contents are from teaching your children lessons, managing your workweek, to getting to know your neighbours.

Compared to Oprah, the Jerry Springer show looks like poisonous waste being poured into society. Jerry ends every show with a ¡°final word¡±. He makes a small speech about the entire ideas of the show. Hopefully, this is the part where most people will learn something very valuable.

Clean as it is, the Oprah is not for everyone. The show¡¯s main viewers are middle-class Americans. Most of these people have the time, money and ability to deal with life¡¯s tougher problems. Jerry Springer on the other hand, has more of a connection with the young adults of society. There are 18-to-21-year-old whose main troubles in life include love, relationship, sex, money and drug. They are the ones who see some value and lessons to be learned through the show¡¯s exploitation.

41.Compared with other TV talk shows, both the Jerry Springer and the Oprah Winfrey are __________.

          A. more interesting B. more formal C. more detailed D. unusually popular

          42. Though the social problems Jerry Springer talks about appear unpleasant, people who watch the shows________.

          A. show disbelief in them B. are ready to face up to them

          C. remain cold to them D. are willing to get away from them

43.Which of the following is likely to be a topic of the Oprah Winfrey show?

          A. A new type of robot. B. National hatred.

          C. Family income planning. D. Street accident.

          44. We can learn from the passage that the two talk shows________.

          A. have become the only ones of its kind

          B. exploit the weaknesses in human nature

          C. appear at different times of the day

          D. attract different people

          45. What is the advantage of the Jerry Springer show ?

          A. The show exposes the dark sides of society.

          B. The show pours poisonous waste into society.

          C. Jerry sums up the whole idea of the show.

          D. Jerry talks about the improvement of society.

          B

It may help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech£®At some point in every speech, every speaker says something that is not understood exactly as he has planned£®Fortunately, the moments are usually not obvious to the listeners. Why ? Because the listeners do not know what the speaker plans to say. They hear only what the speaker does say. If you lose your place for a moment, wrongly change the order of a couple of sentences, or forget to pause at a certain point, no one will be any the wiser£®When such moments occur, don¡¯t worry about them, Just continue as if nothing happened£®

Even if you do make an obvious mistake during a speech, that don¡¯t really matter. If you have ever listened to Martin Luther King¡¯s famous speech ¨C ¡° I have a dream¡±, you may notice that he stumble£¨结巴£©his words twice during the speech£®Most likely, however, you don¡¯t remember£®Why? Because you were fixing your attention on is message rather than on his way of speech-making. People care a lot about making mistakes in a speech because they regard speech-making as a kind of performance rather than as an act of communication. They feel the listeners are like judges in an ice-skating competition£®But, in fact, the listeners are not looking for a perfect performer. They are looking for a well-thought-out speech that express the speaker¡¯s ideas clearly and directly£®Sometimes a mistake or two can actually increase a speakers¡¯ attractiveness by making him more human£®

As you work on your speech, don¡¯t worry about being imperfect£®Once you free your mind of this, you will find it much easier to give your speech freely£®

46£®The underlined part in the first paragraph means that no one will ___________£®

A£®be smarter than you B£®notice your mistakes

C£®do better than you D£®know what you are talking about

47£®You don¡¯t remember obvious mistakes in a speech because ___________£®

A£®your attention is on the content

B£®you don¡¯t fully understand the speech

C£®you don¡¯t know what the speaker plans to say

D£®you find the way of speech-making more important

48£®It can be inferred from the passage that ___________£®

A£®giving a speech is like giving a performance

B£®one to two mistakes in a speech may not be bad

C£®the listeners should pay more attention to how a speech is made

D£®the more mistakes a speaker makes, the more attractive he will be

49£®What would be the best title of the passage?

A£®How to Be a Perfect Speaker

B£®How to Make a Perfect Speech

          C£®Don¡¯t Expect a Perfect Speech

D£®Don¡¯t Expect Mistakes in a Speech

50£®Which of the following statements is true?

A£®If you are careful enough, you can make a perfect speech£®

          B£®Speech-making is a kind of performance£®

C£®Martin Luther King is not a good speaker£®

D£®Listeners are not judges and they pay more attention to the message£®

          C

In a book called Magnificent Obsession, by Lloyd C. Douglas, a description is given of people helping others but doing it secretly. When difficult problems worried an individual, friends nearby would meet to discuss possible solution without the individual knowing their actions. When a solution was agreed upon, one or two of the friends would carry out the plan and solve the problem secretly , to the great delight of the worried individual. The helpers would stand by privately, content with their success. No reward was given to the problem solvers, not even a sincere ¡°thank you¡±, because they were never known.

This concept is popular today but in a different way. The phrase ¡°pay it forward¡± is now used when one person helps another. However, the person helped may not be able to repay the person or group that helped them. So rather than return the favor to their helpers, they are supposed to help someone else in the future, which means they pay it forward. It is a sense of responsibility which makes us want to give back in equal measure to the one who has helped us. But , in this case, the responsibility turns to helping someone in the future.

Suppose your elderly grandmother pays part of your schooling. She may tell you there is no need to repay her because it is a gift from someone who loves you very much. Nothing would please her more than to have you use her money to get a good education.

You may never be able to repay her for such a gift. However, she not only gave you some money , but she provided you with an example that you should also help other people who need it.

People with serious needs are everywhere. Many are children who need better clothes, more books and even better schools. Some are elderly people who can¡¯t afford their medicine or a doctor¡¯s care. Consider how you can ¡°pay it forward¡± rather than pay money back to your grandmother.

          51. The helpers in the book ¡°Magnificent Obsession¡± were not rewarded because ______________.

          A. they hadn¡¯t solved the problems thoroughly

          B. they had solved the problems secretly

          C. they were friends of the worried individual

          D. they expected to be paid back in the future

          52. The underlined word ¡°pay it forward¡± means ____________________.

          A. to repay someone who has helped you

          B. to pay someone else who needs help

          C. to help someone who has helped you

          D. to help someone else who needs help

          53. What does the writer suggest with the example of ¡°your elderly grandmother¡±?

          A. We should learn to respect our grandparents.

          B. We should work hard to get a good education.

          C. We should also lend a hand to other people in need of help.

          D. We should never forget to repay people for their help.

          54. From the passage we know_________________.

          A. everybody needs help

          B. more children need help than elderly people

          C. it costs a lot of money to ¡°pay it forward¡±

          D. nowadays many people help others without being repaid

          55. By writing the passage, the author wishes people in the world to be _____________.

          A. unselfish B. mysterious C. honest D. unforgettable

By presenting examples of successful people whose dreams contributed greatly to their success, this passage emphasizes the importance of dreams and advocates that people should have dream and never give them up.

Nobody will deny that dreams play a very important part in one¡¯s life. I think dreams influence people in the following ways. Firstly, having dreams means intense concentration on specific goals, which undoubtedly increases the possibility of success. Besides, dreams can serve as great motivations, pushing the dreamers to go ahead with courage and overcome difficulties with effort. Lastly, those who have dreams are more likely to be self-disciplined and well-organized, which are necessary qualities for ambitious people.

It has been seen how much dreams have meant to my father¡¯s life. Country born and country bred, he dreamed of becoming an architect as a kid. For many years, he spared no effort to approach his dream by working extremely hard at his lessons and reading books related to architecture. Now he is an authority in architecture and is well-known at home and abroad.

To be brief, no matter who you are and what are doing, you should have your dreams and hold on to them because they give you chances to taste success.

The passage uses several examples to prove the importance of dreams and appeals to us that we should keep our dreams and try to make them came true.

Based on my personal experience, dreams are very important to a person during his lifetime. Dreams are like the hot fire in the cold winter. They can point out the way in which a person can achieve his goal. We are full of hope and power when we have dreams. The one who lose his dream will be easily defeated by others. So, dreams are where we want to go and we can get there.

We can take new-elected American President Obama for an example. He is a black man and he dreamed of being a president when he was young. But as we all know, in fact, the black people don¡¯t have the equal right as white people have. It seems that his dream is impossible. However, Obama has never gave it up and tried his best to make dream come true. Finally, he realized his dream.

Based on that is said above, we can draw a conclusion that dreams are very important to us and we shouldn¡¯t give up them.

From the passage, we know that a successful businessman held on to his dreams, which was finally come true. We should believe in ourselves and struggle for it till we achieve our goals.

There is no denying that dreams play an important role in our daily life. You will believe in yourself and devote yourself into your future as long as you have dreams. It does make sense whether your dreams would finally come true.

The author talks about that dreams are of great importance to one¡¯s success, taking a highly successful businessman as an example to show why we should have a dream and how we deal with it.

I can¡¯t agree more with the author. Just as the famous saying goes, life without a dream is like a sailing without a lighthouse. Once we have dreams, we will spare no effort to struggle for it. At the same time, we can nourish from our life. All in all, success will be made without a dream to make it.

Take Zhang Ning, the badminton player who won the gold medal in the 29th Olympic Games, as an example. Though she is in her thirties and is too old for a player, she has a dream to get the gold medal on her mother land. The strong desire makes her work harder then any other player in the team. Finally, she realized her dream, which others considered almost impossible.

All the statement above leads to the conclusion that we should never forget our dreams if we have them and hold on to it till them come true.
